  • When I decided to try crochet, I was mostly worried about Pip being a stereotypical cat and going after the yarn. I'm happy to report this worry was totally unfounded, he is only interested in attacking my hands as I try to work, so, ya know, we're all good.

He just really doesn't understand how there could possibly be something a hand should be doing that isn't petting him.

  • I think we've seen the last of the snow for this winter (though, I guess we can't really be sure). Things aren't exactly warm, but most of the leftover snow seems to have melted from the front yard and what's left in the backyard is definitely wearing down. Ben really likes this coat though, so I'll let her keep in on for a while longer.

I'm excited for spring, mostly for planting things and playing outside with the dogs. But I will miss winter, it was nice and cozy.

  • This guy, modeling my very first ever crochet project. Yes, it's a scarf, which couldn't be less original, but at least it's kind of a fancy pattern. Look at the basketweave...just, maybe don't look too closely).

This took about 27 hours to do over the last couple of weeks (I'm rounding up a bit, obviously I was moving faster by the end of it). I almost didn't put that number, because I'm embarrassed that it took me so long just to make a scarf, but then I decided that I don't care and I'm just going to be proud of the fact that, 3 1/2 weeks ago I didn't know that crochet hooks came in different sizes and shapes, and now I made a thing. Now I can keep making new things and as I actually work up to normal person speed, it will be nice to look back at this and remember the 30-hour scarf that started it all. 😆

I'm also noticing that all the cool crochet ideas are coming from the kids on TikTok...is this going to be what makes me join TikTok??

It's just @redheartyarns super saver yarn in royal blue (chosen simply because the jumbo skein was on sale for $6) with a basketweave stitch.

  • Happy winter morning, enjoy the sunrise! This one is actually a #latergram from a few weeks ago (notice the lack of snow covering EVERYTHING). I needed to post it here though so it doesn't get lost in the bowels of my camera roll and I end up forgetting about it.

  • It's been snowing on and off for a couple of weeks now (pretty much since February started). For most of December, I was wondering where the snow was and wishing for a cozier winter, it turns out that I just wasn't being patient enough. I wasn't expecting winter to basically start in February, but it's really pretty, so I'll take it. Better late than never!!

I'm also very grateful to live in a place that is able to handle the snow. It's an intense privilege to see this as nice and cozy rather than terrifying. ❤️

  • Stepney Cemetery.

Because, when you're almost a year into a pandemic and it's still not ok to be around other living people, you go visit dead people, obviously.

This place is great because it's another pre-1800 cemetery, which of course means Revolutionary War Ghosts, some of my favorite. Apparently, the first resident here, a soldier named Nathanial Knapp likes to interact with guests, including the oh-so creepy "likes to pull on young women's' hair, "yikes. My hair was fine, but I'm older than Nathanial was when he died, so he probably wouldn't consider me anyway. There is a bloody-mary like chant that you can do at his tombstone to entice him to come play. I think it goes without saying that I did NOT do that. (let me tell you, I saw Candyman when I was 12, and I'm still not ok).

Aside from creepy Nathanial and his possible misogyny, this place shares a famous ghost with the nearby Union Cemetery. The White Lady seems to traverse both spots in her wanderings. Not to mention that Ed Warren, the ghost hunter whose book made that White Lady famous in the first place, is buried here himself.

  • Plus side: very excited to be sent curly hair stuff to try out! Downside: didn't work great for me. Oh well, not everything can be a winner.

  • A very old warehouse overlooking a frozen Wethersfield Cove. This was our last outing before we got buried under snowmageddon the next day (don't worry, we're fine).

I wish I had a great ghost story to tell about this place (doesn't it look perfect for one??) but sadly, I couldn't find anything. I did manage to come across a message board where people who grew up in Wethersfield shared ghost stories about other parts of the town though. So, even if the cove itself may not be haunted, it seems that the cemetery and most of the old houses have enough ghosts to make up for it. Clearly, we need to hang out around here more when things open up again.
